The Nassau County Clerk’s Office, at 240 Old Country Road in Mineola, is where sole proprietors and general partnerships doing business in Nassau County register a business name. Under New York law, anyone operating under a name other than their own legal name must file an assumed name certificate, commonly called a DBA.
The office’s Division of Business Names accepts DBA certificates for individuals and partners, along with amendments and certificates of discontinuance for businesses that close. Forms are available on the Clerk’s website, must be notarized, and can be filed in person or by mail. Filed certificates are public records, and the office also indexes New York State incorporation papers for businesses located in the county.
This office is for sole proprietors and partnerships. LLCs and corporations file their assumed names with the New York Department of State instead.
There is a filing fee, which includes two certified copies, and banks usually ask for a certified copy when you open a business account. A business name must be filed in every county where the business operates, so a company working in both Nassau and Suffolk needs to file in both.
For new Nassau County sole proprietors, filing a DBA is often the first official step before opening a business bank account.
